    I think the hottest topic is how to get the perfect mixture of ambience with close micing techniques. Everyone seems to be searching for a ‘natural’ sound, with less control as it were, as opposed to in the previous thinking where control was everything. Might not be as popular as the ‘Analogue vs Digital’ debate but it’s still something we all have to think about!

    The hottest topic in audio engineering today is compression and limiting and the Loudness Wars. Listen to jazz, to classical music, to the spoken word – music and sound are supposed to breathe. Most contemporary music starts loud and stays there.

    The irony is we now have recording systems that can handle the soft parts – not like the tape hiss of old (that put Ray Dolby on the map). Our 64 bit systems can accurately capture a performance.

    Now we need some performers!

    Whether a hot topic, or a trend, it’s important to keep real audio engineering relevant in the marketplace. There are folks who call themselves audio engineers who have NEVER truly engineered anything. Engineering is a discipline requiring knowledge borne from solid education and practice. We don’t need garbage collectors selling themselves as sanitation engineers.

    In my opinion, the most important topic is how to create a natural spacial image for all tracks in the mix, when using computer software exclusively (ie., no outboard gear). It’s a “hot topic” because as computers gain processing power, speed and memory, the home DAW should be able to achieve mixes comparable to the classic albums of the 70’s and 80’s.

    Beyond 5.1: the encoding and delivery of large numbers of audio channels

    As interest in multichannel audio and sound field recreation grows, so also does the need for a standardised and scaleable approach to distributing and recreating the requisite data streams. Five seems to be gaining traction but what about the (possibly much) larger channel numbers that will be needed for realistic sound field regeneration? Ten – twenty channels or more? Unless 5.1 is the end game, we will need to devise scaleable means of coding and decoding that are not tied to a specific number of reproduce channels.

    In one word: Convergence!

    Much as some audiophiles might wish otherwise, the biggest issue today is surely the continuing convergence of IT and mobile communications with what was the traditional audio and video media/entertainment industry. This has already changed the audio industry beyond recognition, from what it was a couple of decades ago, and change will doubtless continue apace, with metadata and data format becoming a close second in importance to the original signal content.

    Despite years of debate, the old analog vs digital topic still remains very much alive and apparently, due to the immense amount of discussion on this matter on the Web, is still a hot topic today!

    On a side note, does the consumer really care? Can they differentiate ITB vs OTB? Personally, I think not!

    Hottest topic today is the public’s growing tolerance for poor audio. Too much content is produced with ‘simple’ tools that lack the depth and control of professional tools (i.e. a recording studio, live instruments, good mics and an experienced engineer). I’m all in favor of the garage-band-four-track ethos, but too often now that’s seen as the end in and of itself for audio production.

    The hottest topic is how to make money as an engineer in an ever changing business. There will always be difference of opinion about technique, gear and technology. These hard opinions were formed because people believed in these techniques used daily as qualified engineers who make a living at it; not hobbyists who casually “mess around” after work.

    How much quality is enough? It is patently impossible to go for the highest quality possible because that quality will never translate through the transmission media of today. So at what point are we simply wasting time on quality that “won’t go home”?

    One of the biggest concerns on the part of modern audio engineers should be the misconception in the media about the difference in quality between analog and digital. In fact I think there is a general misconception on the part of the public at large as to what analog even means. in todays’s LA Times the Bjork review started with this phrase:

    “The digitization of music has impoverished the average listening experience. Not only do compressed files sound meager compared to the sonic prowess of good old vinyl…”

    My reaction is that this is a total misinterpretation of what the term analog means. And it distorts the view on the part of the media and the public regarding the pros and cons of digital vs analog. To me analog means two things, a form of recording technology involving tape and a type of electrical circuit. The issue of qualitative differences seems to be distorted by romantic notions of how things sounded in the old days.

    Coming from a background of lo-fi analog recording using Tascam 1/2″ 8 tracks and portastudios, I have always found digital recording to be vastly superior. But I do recognize that the process is different and may cause someone to get caught up in endless editing and perfecting and thereby lose the warmth of the original performance. This is not the fault of digital but the fault of the artists and engineers themselves.

    …to add to the comment above, Native Instruments has been working on their OSC technology to replace the midi interface. Which uses sub-nets to communicate between these devices and was implemented in their Reaktor series. Though they have further bugs to work out, check it out if any one is interested? It is really quite cool!

    I have been following the NAMM, MMA, and other artists/educators on production goals they are interested in attaining. One of the most widely discussed topics currently going around is the use of intelligent digital audio workstations. Especially with the announcement of Apple’s SIRI program to debut by 2013 (sometime). The focus has been on integration from one smart device to another, and what role midi will play on future technology. Seamless flow of integration to intelligent software/hardware devices capable of learning an artist’s preferences will be a major selling point in future technologies. So where does that leave our current communication methods via midi, and what technologies will arise that will demonstrate clean flow of operations between these devices described above? Will wireless be the next wave? Sorry about the long answer, it’s a complicated topic!

    Stage Mix VS Recording mix. It always seems like you have to retrain musicians to listen for nuances in a quieter mix, rather than adjusting intestines with too many subs in a stage situation. They have to keep their momentum without the deafening roar of a club mix, which far too often sacrifices clarity for loudness. I have only heard a few mixers who can take it to the top without roaring distorted vocals and bass. Once it turns to mud, it’s so hard to bring it back.

As equipment continues to improve, cheap/effective preset- enhanced consumer software floods the untrained lay market – as with non-linear editing – and they become more used to badly produced sound.

    With the changes in newer formats and listening media, are the CONSUMERS accepting a lesser listening experience to what the Artist/Engineer/Producer originally intended without realising?

    Are there any current landmark albums (in the last decade or so) for us Audiophiles to talk about in terms of Recording and Production in the same way as we refer to past albums such as ‘Dark side of the Moon’, ‘Pet Sounds’, ‘Sgt. Peppers’?

    Mastering is often the most underestimated skill , with some engineers trying to finalize a session when the process is above their ability . Also I have noticed that other engineers are afraid to take responsibilty for the final stage , and don’t really learn how to do this . It happens to be my focus at this time . Kind Thanks , Mark

    I’m a fan of hard Limiting. I really am a newbe to recording. I think folks think the louder the better. I believe the most use a anolog hardware or plugins for the warmth and when finishing the mix. But Digital Recording is being harshly abused. What a great time to be alive. Hope this makes sence?
