Understanding Phase

In this video we take a look at two of the ways our ears hear where sounds are coming from, either from the left or right; level and time (or phase) difference. From the basics of panning to learning how to hear and use out-of-phase tracks, in this video, Ben Harris demonstrates some confusing ideas in a simple and straightforward manner.

Ben Harris is a professor of recording and music production at the University of Colorado at Denver, a certified Pro Tools instructor, and a recording engineer/producer.  He is also the author of Home Studio Set-up, a book published by Focal Press which is an all you need to know guide to setting up, running and getting great sound from a project studio.  For a sample chapter, click here.

Recently, Ben produced four instructional videos for us, the one featured above, as well as ones on stereo recording, changing the groove and acoustic mailboxes.  All can be viewed, as well as many other audio related videos, at Focal Press’ YouTube site.
